# Add, edit, or delete an asset on mobile

Add a piece of equipment to an asset group, correct an asset's details, or remove an asset from a visit, without starting an inspection report. What you save changes the property's asset group itself, the same one the office sees in the web app.

> **Where to find it:** Mobile app > Visits > tap a visit card > Asset Groups > tap a group > Assets tab

## Before you start

* You don't need to be clocked in, and no role permission is needed. Any technician who can open the visit sees **Add** on the **Assets** tab and the three-dot icon on every asset card.
* The fields on the form are the attributes set up for that asset type, so their names depend on your business. Essential sets up asset types and their fields.
* Adding, editing, and deleting an asset all work offline. The change shows on the group right away and is sent when you're back online.

## See the assets in a group

Open the visit, scroll down to **Asset Groups**, and tap a group. Each group is listed by its type and asset count, such as **Fire Extinguishers (12 Total)**, with **Next Due on** and the group's earliest service due date.

The **Assets** tab opens first. It shows one card per asset, titled with the asset's number and type (for example **3. Extinguisher**) and listing each attribute with its value. At the bottom of a card, each recurring service that applies to that asset shows a line such as **Annual Inspection Due** with that asset's next due date. An empty group shows **No Assets**.

## Add an asset

1. On the **Assets** tab, tap **Add** at the right end of the tab row.
2. In **Create Asset**, tap **Type** (**Select an asset type**) and choose the asset type. The form fills in with that type's fields.
3. Fill in what you know. Every field is optional.
4. Tap **Submit**. It stays grayed out until you choose a **Type** and fill in at least one field. For a type with a GPS location attribute, the app tags your location as soon as you choose the type, and that counts. If the app cannot get a location (permission is off, location services are off, or there is no fix), **Submit** is also available once that attempt finishes, even with every other field blank.

The new asset appears as a card once it has saved. The form has no last service dates: Essential starts the asset's service history from the group's recurring services that apply to it.

If an asset you added is missing the next time you open the visit, tell your office instead of adding it again. An asset type can be limited to a set number per group, and Essential doesn't save another asset of a type that is full.

## How the fields work

* **Text and number fields**: type the value.
* **On/off switch**: tap to turn it on or off.
* **Date field**: tap **Select Date** and pick the date. The picker goes back to 1900, so a manufacture or installation date before 2000 can be entered as it is.
* **Select an option**: a dropdown with a fixed list.
* **Select or enter a value**: search the suggestions, or type a new value and tap **Create "your text"** to use it.
* **Select all that apply**: pick every option that applies.
* **Barcode field**: type the code, or tap the camera icon to scan it.
* **Photo field**: tap **Take Photo** or **Select Photo** (**Select Photos** when the field holds up to 10). This is how a photo is attached to one specific unit. To remove a photo, tap the **x** on its thumbnail and confirm. See [Add photos to an asset (photo attributes)](/field-operations/assets/add-photos-to-an-asset-photo-attributes.md).
* **GPS section**: always last. See [Asset locations](/field-operations/mobile/manage-asset-groups-and-recurring-services.md#asset-locations).

If a fixed dropdown is missing an option you need, it can't be added from the mobile app or from your office's settings. The options belong to the asset type, which Essential sets up, so ask your office to request the new option from Essential.

## Edit an asset

1. On the **Assets** tab, tap the three-dot icon at the top right of the asset's card.
2. Tap **Edit Asset**.
3. Change what you need. **Type** is locked, because an asset's type can't be changed.
4. Tap **Submit**. It stays grayed out until something is different.

The back arrow at the top left leaves without saving. If you made changes, the app asks **Are you sure you want to discard your changes?** with **Stay on Page** and **Discard Changes**.

An asset's next due date can't be typed in. It is calculated from the last time each service was done, so it changes when the service is completed on an inspection report or visit summary, or when the service's date is corrected. See [Manage asset groups and recurring services on mobile](/field-operations/mobile/manage-asset-groups-and-recurring-services.md).

## Delete an asset

1. Tap the three-dot icon on the asset's card.
2. Tap **Delete Asset**.
3. Tap **Delete** to confirm. To keep the asset, tap outside the sheet or swipe it down.

Deleting an asset can't be undone. **Delete Asset** is left out of the menu when the asset type is at the minimum number its group must have.

## What the office sees

Each change is recorded under your name in the asset group's history and on the job. The office's Jobs task for the visit counts it in its **Asset Group Changes** summary.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://learn.withessential.com/field-operations/mobile/add-edit-or-delete-an-asset.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
