# Change your settings, turn on notifications, or sign out in the mobile app

Your avatar in the mobile app opens a small menu for your own account: **Settings** for how the app looks and how you hear about schedule changes, and **Logout** to sign out.

> **Where to find it:** Mobile app > your avatar (the circle with your initials at the top right of **Visits**, **Reports**, **Documents**, **Timecard**, **Pricing**, **Support**, or **More**) > **Settings** or **Logout**.

The avatar shows only on the main tab screens. Inside a visit, an inspection report, or Settings, go back first.

The menu also shows your name and the email you sign in with. You can't edit them in the app; on the web, you or someone with the **Manage Users** permission can. After a change, the app shows the new name and email the next time it opens or comes back on screen with a connection, without signing out. See [Change your name or email](/administration/settings/change-your-name-or-email.md).

## Open Settings

1. On a main tab screen, tap your avatar at the top right.
2. Tap **Settings**.

Settings has up to two sections, and each one saves with its own button. **Schedule notifications** appears only when you are set up as a technician in your business; otherwise Settings shows **Appearance** alone.

* **Appearance:** choose **Light** or **Dark**, then tap **Save appearance**. The choice is saved to your account, so it also applies in the web app and on any other phone or tablet you sign in on. The app does not follow your phone's system dark mode. See [Choose your appearance (Light or Dark)](/administration/settings/choose-your-appearance-light-dark-or-system-theme.md).
* **Schedule notifications:** choose a **Frequency** and a **Channel** for changes to a future day's schedule, then tap **Save notifications**. When the section reads **Managed by your administrator**, you can see your preference but only an admin can change it. Changes to today's schedule always send a push right away. See [Configure technician schedule-change notifications](/administration/settings/configure-technician-schedule-notifications.md).

Nothing is saved until you tap the section's Save button. If you go back with an unsaved change, the app asks **Discard changes?**; tap **Keep editing** to stay or **Discard** to leave. Saving needs an internet connection.

Mobile Settings has no password option. To change your password, sign out and tap **Reset my password** on the login screen.

## Turn on notifications

Essential sends push notifications when today's schedule changes, when a future day's schedule changes (if your preference includes push), and as an end-of-day reminder when you are still clocked in to your last visit of the day more than an hour after it was scheduled to end.

1. After you sign in, your phone may ask whether Essential can send you notifications. Allow them.
2. If you declined, or were never asked, open your phone's own Settings app, find **Essential**, and allow notifications.
3. Back in Essential, tap your avatar, tap **Logout**, and sign in again. Essential registers your phone for push when you sign in.

If notifications still do not arrive:

* Push goes to one phone or tablet per user: the one that registered for notifications most recently, which is usually the one you signed in on last. Sign in again on the device you want notified.
* For future-day changes, check **Schedule notifications** in Settings. **Off** sends nothing for future days, **Email** sends email instead of push, and **Daily summary** sends one summary a day.
* Check your phone's Do Not Disturb or focus mode, and that it has a connection.

Declining notifications does not block anything else in the app.

## Sign out

1. On a main tab screen, tap your avatar at the top right.
2. Tap **Logout**.

You are signed out right away, with no confirmation step, and the app returns to the login screen.

Before you sign out, check the banner under the header. If it says you are offline or still syncing, wait for it to clear when you can. Work captured offline stays on the phone for your user and business, but it only syncs while you are signed in on that phone.

## Use a different account

The mobile app has no account or business switcher. Each sign-in is one user at one business. To use another account, tap **Logout**, then sign in with that account's email and password.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://learn.withessential.com/field-operations/mobile/change-your-settings-or-sign-out.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
