# Create a task in a custom folder

Create a task whenever work needs tracking, even if it did not start from a quote, visit, or inspection.

> **Where to find it:** Tasks → any custom folder → Create a task

1. Select a custom folder from the Tasks sidebar.
2. Click **Create a task**.
3. Search for and select the property the task is about.
4. Optionally select a **Job**. Only jobs at that property are listed, with recent jobs shown first. Search by job number or service to find older jobs. Leave **No job** selected for work that applies to the property generally.
5. Enter a description of the work.
6. Click **Create Task**.

The task opens in the selected folder, starting in its first To Do status, or its first In Progress status if it has no To Do status. Click the property name and address to open its property page. You can save notes, change its status, or choose **Move to Folder** to send it to another custom folder.

If you selected a job, its link appears in the task's Details, and the task appears on that job's Tasks tab. The link stays with the task when you move or complete it. Jobs without visits can also be selected. Changing the property before creation clears the selected job.

Save or cancel any unsaved notes or status changes before moving a task.

Custom folders under Jobs and under your own task categories support Create a task. Folders you added to another built-in category, such as **Quotes → Waiting on PO**, hold that category's tasks, so they don't offer Create a task; move a quote or invoice task into them instead. Use [Create a deficiency task](/field-operations/tasks/create-a-deficiency-task.md) when you need to record deficiencies with assets and photos.

To set up your folders, see [Organize task categories and folders](/administration/settings/organize-task-categories-and-folders.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://learn.withessential.com/field-operations/tasks/create-a-task-in-a-custom-folder.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
